Pro Car Sketch | Custom Automotive Art

Pro Car Sketch Story

What began as a simple marker sketch for a friend unexpectedly evolved into Pro Car Sketch, my venture in custom automotive portraiture. I quickly discovered a deep market for this unique, one-of-a-kind gift: people share profound connections with their cars, from beloved daily drivers to extraordinary collections.

This led to establishing booths at major auto shows across the country (including NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston). Beyond personal commissions, prints of my artwork proved incredibly popular, often selling out – I'd bring thousands of framed and unframed prints. I cultivated a loyal fan base, with collectors returning year after year, testament to a venture that generated significant revenue (e.g., selling up to $25,000 worth of sketches in just 10 days).

However, managing this multi-city operation as a one-man show demanded immense logistical expertise: coordinating inventory (thousands of prints and hundreds of frame boxes), display setups, and technology (TVs, payment registers) across various locations. Despite my passion for the sketching and direct interaction (the 20% art), the backend comprised 80% business management.

Ultimately, sales began to slow due to broader economic struggles, and the COVID-19 pandemic effectively halted all auto shows, leading Pro Car Sketch to take a back seat. This journey provided invaluable lessons in entrepreneurial agility, market dynamics, and the demanding operational realities of a creative business.

A good problem to have: running out of prints! This photo captures the demanding pace of restocking our booth, ensuring our most popular sketches were always available to meet the high demand throughout the show.

Teamwork for High Demand

Managing high demand at the shows meant building a dedicated team. This photo with my hired staff highlights the teamwork essential for constant restocking, sales, customer service, and onsite framing – proving it takes a village to run a successful creative business at scale.

Event Credentials & Planning

A glimpse into the meticulous backend: securing proper credentials, booking prime booth locations, and managing all event logistics were crucial planning elements for seamless operation at major auto shows.

Behind the Scenes Logistics (Chicago Auto Show)

Behind every successful auto show exhibit was a complex logistical ballet. Here, a forklift loads our essential gear for the Chicago Auto Show, part of the massive coordination of displays, equipment, and thousands of prints for cross-country events.

Customer Appreciation & Engagement

Customer Appreciation & Engagement

The ultimate reward: connecting directly with customers who genuinely appreciated the art. Many would ask for a photo, happy to take home a signed print and a memorable experience from the show.

A proud moment at an auto show: showcasing my custom automotive art alongside Chip Foose, legendary automotive designer and fellow Art Center College of Design alumnus. It was an honor to share my work and receive his appreciation for the craft.
